Q. What is a data center? A. A data center is a computer facility designed for continuous use by several users, and well equipped with hardware, software, peripherals, power conditioning and backup, communication equipment, security systems, etc. Power continues to lead as a concern for data center operations. Data centers are designed to a specific power density - watts per square foot - with a typical cabinet of equipment occupying 14 sq. ft. of space. There is no single, standardized method to account for data center costs. Users need to define a chart of accounts that specifies all the cost elements that constitute the overall cost, and the key portfolios or categories (such as servers, software and networking) that are part of that cost. Most line of business managers take for granted 100 percent IT up time, instant access to trained support personnel, uninterrupted access to data, and are dependent on top-flight management of IT assets in data centers. The usual goal of virtualization is to centralize administrative tasks while improving scalability and work loads. Data centers are commonly filled with large numbers of servers that require a tremendous amount of time and money to maintain. One of the primary reasons organisations do not perform frequent backups is that traditional storage management software runs over the network and can negatively impact network performance. As a result, many companies can only perform backups during off hours. However, this approach is also flawed because it exposes data to loss. A storage management solution that minimises network loading enables companies to perform backups as needed during the day. With the Cisco UCS 82598KR-CI adapters, a maximum of two adapters are presented to the VMware ESX hypervisor running on the blade. This interface count does not support a fabric failover, and the service console must be migrated to the Cisco Nexus 1000V Series Switch along with all these other adapter types if any high-availability requirement exists. The actual migration of this interface during VMware ESX deployment on the blade is discussed in the specific adapter section later in this document, but for more detailed information about how to migrate a user's service console, see the Cisco Nexus 1000V Series documentation. Green IT refers to the study and practice of using computers and IT resources in a more efficient and environmentally responsible way. High availability is a system design protocol and associated implementation that ensures a certain degree of operational continuity during a given measurement period. A broad group of industry-leading partners supports the open, standards-based unified fabric architecture of the Cisco Nexus 5010 Switch. This switch also delivers more than 500 Gbps of switching capacity with 20 fixed wirespeed 10 Gigabit Ethernet ports that support Data Center Ethernet and FCoE. In addition, one expansion port supports 8-port 1/2/4 Gigabit Fibre Channel, 4-port 10 Gigabit Ethernet (Data Center Ethernet and FCoE) and 4-port 1/2/4 Gigabit Fibre Channel, and 6-port 10 Gigabit Ethernet (Data Center Ethernet and FCoE). |
