Q. What is a data center? A. A data center is a computer facility designed for continuous use by several users, and well equipped with hardware, software, peripherals, power conditioning and backup, communication equipment, security systems, etc. Power continues to lead as a concern for data center operations. Data centers are designed to a specific power density - watts per square foot - with a typical cabinet of equipment occupying 14 sq. ft. of space. Removing a single x86 server from a data center will result in savings of more than $400 a year in energy costs alone. The rise in technology and a changing corporate landscape have presented data center operators new challenges. Server virtualization is the masking of server resources (including the number and identity of individual physical servers, processors, and operating systems) from server users. The intention is to spare the user from having to understand and manage complicated details of server resources while increasing resource sharing and utilization and maintaining the capacity to expand later. Hypervisor software is the secret sauce that makes virtualization possible. This software, also known as a virtualization manager, sits between the hardware and the operating system, and decouples the operating system and applications from the hardware. The hypervisor assigns the amount of access that the operating systems and applications have with the processor and other hardware resources, such as memory and disk input/output. Many IT departments encourage users to save critical data to available network servers under the control of enterprise software. This policy, in most cases, is not successful, since users store data locally, especially mobile users who are seldom connected to a network. Improve IT responsiveness to rapidly changing business demands with the Cisco Unified Computing System. This next-generation data center platform accelerates the delivery of new services simply, reliably, and securely through end-to-end provisioning and migration support. Even though Green IT has become a hot topic in 2010, its roots run back to early 90's. In 1992, the Energy Star program was launched by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. This program encouraged new electronic devices to be more energy-efficient by lowering energy consumption, efficient design and reduced use of hazardous material. The Energy Star program was revised in 2006 and now includes much stricter efficiency requirements and a tiered ranking system for approval. Data storage systems are used in a variety of businesses for the purpose of storing and maintaining data which is critical to the operation of the businesses and their customers. It is very important that such data storage systems be highlyreliable to minimize or eliminate the chance of losing data if the system fails. The most secure and reliable systems employ total redundancy, in which every component of the system is replicated, such that, upon a failure of a component, anothercomponent takes over operation, so that the data storage system can remain fully functional. For example, two storage processors may be provided in a system such that if one fails, the other assumes the operation of the failed processor as well asmaintaining its own. However, total redundancy is expensive and can be an inefficient use of system resources. The Cisco Nexus 1000V aligns management of the operational environment for virtual machines and physical server connectivity in the data center , reducing the total cost of ownership (TCO) by providing operational consistency and visibility throughout the network. It offers flexible collaboration between the server, network, security, and storage teams while supporting various organizational boundaries and individual team autonomy. |
